Educação para além das grades: Alfabetização de Jovens, Adultos e Idosos em privação de liberdade na Unidade Penal de Arraias - To

Abstract

This research stems from the concerns of the researcher, who was a monitor, scholarship student, and literacy instructor for the extension project of the Federal University of Tocantins, Arraias campus, "Wings of Knowledge: Literacy for Young Adults and Elderly People Deprived of Liberty at the Arraias Penal Unit, TO." There was dialogue and a bridge between the Federal University of Tocantins and the Arraias Penal Unit, where 14 male inmates aged 23 to 60, whose schooling had been interrupted at some point, were taught to read and write. The guiding question that motivated this research was: How do the state of Tocantins and the municipality of Arraias understand, perceive, and guarantee the right to education for the prison population whose formal education has been interrupted? The general objective was to analyze how the literacy process of the inmates occurred from a Freirean perspective. The specific objectives were: I) to investigate the historical process of Adult Literacy from a Freirean perspective. II) To investigate illiteracy in the municipality of Arraias-Tocantins. III) To understand EJA (Youth and Adult Education) for people deprived of liberty. IV) To problematize the narratives of students deprived of liberty. This is a qualitative social research study that employed participatory research, action research, bibliographic research, and field research. We conducted questionnaires with 6 inmates. The results reveal the importance of Youth and Adult Education for the literacy process of prisoners, as well as the humanization of educational spaces and the promotion of critical awareness among people deprived of liberty
